How Pectin Is Modified
When its larger molecules are broken down into smaller ones, modified Citrus Pectin takes on a different molecular weight than ordinary citrus pectin. There are several ways to modify pectin. The less expensive method is a process that uses sodium hydroxide (otherwise known as lye) along with an acid that breaks down pectin?s molecules into smaller, non-uniform fragments, which consist of molecules no smaller than 30,000 daltons. Studies indicate that pectin?s molecules should be between 10,000 to 20,000 daltons for optimal absorption.
Wonder's high-quality modified citrus pectin, is produced using an enzymatic process that produces a product with molecules between 10,000 and 20,000 daltons. When pectin?s molecules are between 10,000 and 20,000 daltons more of them are absorbed and get to the target area. It takes less of Wonder's, a high-quality modified citrus pectin, to be effective than one of a lower quality.
Wonder's Modified Citrus Pectin is a complex polysaccharide rich in galactosyl residues, derived from citrus fruits. Ordinary pectin is not absorbed due to its long molecular chain, but Wonder's is manufactured by a special process that results in a shorter molecular chain that is readily absorbed. This allows the body to utilize its important polysaccharide components.
