The symptoms known as ringworm can be not only uncomfortable, but also unsightly. Here, we look at the condition known as ringworm, and some natural supplements that can aid in mitigating and rehabilitating an occurrence of this highly inconvenient condition.

What is Ringworm?

The term “ringworm” does not refer to a parasite or dirt-dwelling creature. Ringworm refers to a group of around 40 different fungal skin rashes, all of which can cause redness and discomfort. These infections are various strains of the Tinea fungi. A ringworm rash typically appears as a red, circular patch of skin. This patch of skin could have blisters in the middle or around it, and the area might be patchy. The ringworm rash is itchy. It most commonly occurs on the scalp, arms, feet (as in “athlete's foot”), or on the groin/inner thigh area (“jock itch”).  Ringworm is very contagious, and spread easily through direct contact, and through secondary contact in damp areas, such as a locker room. Ringworm is more common in youth than in adults. With sufficient treatment, it can come and go within roughly four weeks.

Prevention & Treatment

Ringworm can be prevented with certain precautions. These are especially important for children and youth. Precautionary steps include regularly washing with soap and water, and drying the skin sufficiently afterward. Wear fresh, clean clothes daily, especially if you're likely to sweat, and do not wear anyone else's clothes, socks, or shoes. There are several types of OTC remedies available that can treat ringworm. Antifungal creams are the most common OTC treatments. Natural treatments are another type of treatment. Medical attention should be sought if these treatments do not begin to show healing or resolution within about two weeks. In some cases, medical attention is recommended, or even necessary. Ringworm on the scalp, beard area, or nails necessitates medical attention. Medical attention should also be sought if symptoms persist longer than two weeks with OTC or natural remedy treatments. Antifungal ointments would be prescribed; These have potential side effects, but are necessary in some cases.

Products That Address Ringworm

The following natural products have the potential to help alleviate, or prevent, ringworm. It is recommended that you consult your healthcare provider before using these for ringworm. Aloe vera is potentially useful in treating ringworm. Six antiseptic agents are contained in aloe vera and these have antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Aloe vera has the potential to help relieve ringworm and the itching it causes, but it is not as likely to absolve ringworm as it would other minor skin conditions.  Eucalyptus oil is an essential oil derived from leaves of the eucalyptus tree. Essential oils have a strong reputation as antifungal agents, having been shown to combat fungal infections. Two to three drops of Eucalyptus oil can be diluted in water, and gently applied to the rash on a daily basis until it clears. Turmeric is a unique spice with the potential to remedy a myriad of different ailments. Both the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of turmeric make it useful in abating a ringworm rash. Turmeric can help relieve ringworm merely by oral consumption. It can also be mixed with water and applied topically for relief and healing. Garlic extract can help ringworm because of some of the properties of garlic. Garlic extract tablets taken two to four times a day during a ringworm infection can help.  If you or your children sweat regularly, it's worth it to know about ringworm. The above treatments can prove to be excellent in helping to alleviate this pesky fungal infection. It is recommended that you talk to your doctor about using these remedies, and about any necessary medical treatments for ringworm.
