There’s good news for Americans when it comes to life expectancy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average life expectancy is 78.8 years of age — a record high in this country. The report, which is based on 2012 records, also revealed that women have a higher life expectancy of 81.2 years compared to 76.4 years for men.
However, the causes of death remained unchanged from the previous year. The top 10 leading causes of death were heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, stroke, unintentional injuries, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, kidney disease and suicide. They accounted for 73.8 percent of all deaths.
To combat those type of diseases as well as engage in an improved quality of life, many Americans are managing their weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise. Also, supplements can assist those who are unable to get all their nutrients through diet. Here are four vitamins and supplements worth considering for the 40 and older crowd.
Calcium. This nutrient is essential for bone development and the functioning of your muscles, nerves, and heart. Women over 40 should be getting at least 1,000 mg a day, while those older than 50 should be getting around 1,200 mg. Calcium can be found in dairy, broccoli, almonds and tofu.
Vitamin B12. Essential for blood and brain function, Vitamin B12 can be gained from meat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs. However, those over 50 may have a more difficult time absorbing Vitamin B12 because of lowering stomach acid levels.
Vitamin D. In addition to assisting in the absorption of calcium, Vitamin D has been linked to a lowered risk of heart disease, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, and some cancers. You can get Vitamin D from fish and fortified foods like cereals and bread.
Magnesium. Naturally found in dark leafy greens, avocados, seeds and nuts, magnesium is important for the regulation of blood pressure. Deficiencies in magnesium have been associated with inflammation, heart disease, and diabetes.
Consider taking these supplements on a daily basis if you're 40 and older to help you feel good and assist you in getting the nutrients you need.
