Doing so can reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other diseases. Even if you can’t reach 150 minutes a week, any exercise on a regular basis can be beneficial, according to recent studies. For example, TIME shows one study that revealed adults who got less than one hour of exercise a week still had a 15 percent in death risk compared to sedentary people. Another study showed that people who walked for a short amount of time each week experienced a 19 percent drop in death risk.
3. Stop smoking.
According to the CDC, quitting smoking can lead to immediate benefits. It reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. Numerous programs are available to assist smokers who want to quit, including those offered by the American Lung Association.
4. Drink in moderation.
The Mayo Clinic says drinking alcohol in moderation, if someone should decide to drink at all, reduces the risk of developing heart disease. According to governmental guidelines, that translates into one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.
