Sleep Aid Suitable for Vegetarian Diets

"Melatonin is a natural sleep aid. It's secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-size structure at the center of the brain, as our eyes register the fall of darkness." At night melatonin is produced to help our bodies regulate our sleep-wake cycles. Melatonin is not the sleep aid for everyone but is a great sleep aid for many especially as we age.

The amount of Melatonin produced by our body seems to lessen as we get older. Scientists believe this may be why young people have less problem sleeping than older people.

Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland of mammals and aids in the regulation of circadian rhythms (internal body clock).
Melatonin helps regulate sleep-wake or circadian rhythms.
Melatonin is referred to by some biochemists and human physiologists as the master hormone, because it regulates the production of most human hormones, both paracrine and endocrine. In addition, melatonin, taken alone, is an immunoregulator that enhances T cell production somewhat. However,
when melatonin is taken in conjunction with calcium, it is a very potent immunostimulator of the T cell response. This is the reason it is used extensively as an adjuvant
in many treatment protocols. Because it does not have to be prescribed, and since it is in the public domain, few doctors care to publicize its advantages.
