It was in the early 1950s that EDTA was first used in the treatment of lead poisoning, with surprising and dramatic results. Workers in battery factories frequently developed lead poisoning, as did sailors in the US Navy who painted ships with lead-based paint. Intravenous infusions of EDTA successfully dealt with this problem, and indeed to this day the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA suggests EDTA chelation as the ideal method of treating not only lead poisoning but also as the emergency treatment for hypercalcaemia. It was found that there was often a marked improvement in the circulatory status of patients with chronic lead poisoning, who also had atherosclerotic (atheromatous deposits in the arteries) conditions and who were being treated by EDTA infusion.

EDTA today is awash with so much dis-information about how EDTA will work "best". Put into question is the effectiveness of the delivery method. Do capsules work as good as suppositories or liquids of IV?

Rectal versus oral absorption of codeine phosphate in man. (click here)
Rectal absorption of codeine phosphate from various dosage forms was studied in man. The rectal dosage forms included aqueous solutions and fatty suppositories. A comparison was made with an orally administered solution. The plasma concentrations of codeine were measured by means of HPLC analysis after a single dose of 60 mg codeine phosphate in a cross-over study in 7 volunteers. Compared with oral dosing rectal absorption from an aqueous solution or a fatty suppository produced an almost identical plasma concentration profile with similar interindividual variations. Comparing the absorption rate characteristics it appeared that rectal absorption from an alkaline solution containing codeine phosphate proceeded significantly (P less than 0.05) more rapid than after oral dosing. No essential difference in bioavailability was observed between the various rectal and oral dosage forms.
